Last Thursday evening, on May 11th, the Wesley Hospital Auditorium was filled with people who were eager to learn more about all things coeliac disease, including the latest research, and advocacy efforts. The event held by Wesley Research Institute was an excellent opportunity for coeliac disease advocates to connect, learn, and enjoy gluten-free food and drinks.
Helen Tzouganatos, a gluten-free cookbook author, television host, food photographer, and recipe developer, shared her personal coeliac journey, including her struggle with infertility and the importance of supporting coeliac research. Her story was an inspiration to all, and it highlighted the need for more research and advocacy in this area.
A/Prof James Daveson presented the latest research on coeliac disease, including its history and future implications. Many attendees were impressed with the presentation, and they expressed their excitement for the future of coeliac disease research.
The evening celebrated the official launch of the institute’s Coeliac Research Network; aiming to provide patients, carers, doctors and allied health professionals direct access to the latest coeliac science and to encourage people to support and participate in research.
Leading gastroenterologist Dr James Daveson, Director of the institute’s Coeliac Disease and Immune Health Research Program, said the network was an important adjunct to the range of community supports available for coeliac patients.
The event was an excellent opportunity for coeliac disease advocates to connect and network. "There was certainly a lot of enthusiasm about the new network and the opportunity to help determine future research priorities," said a Wesley Research Institute staff member. The positive feedback from attendees showed that the event was successful in bringing together a community of passionate and friendly people.
The event was MCed by Helen Tzouganatos, who expressed her delight at being part of such a groundbreaking event. "It was an honour to MC last night’s event celebrating the groundbreaking work the Wesley Institute is pioneering globally for coeliac disease," she said.
Another event attendee said, "I went along, and it was fantastic. Everyone is extremely passionate and friendly."
